Palatal Expansion For Teens
Orthodontic treatment during the teenage years can still have a significant impact on long-term dental health and facial balance. While much of facial growth occurs in childhood, important changes continue into the teen years—making it a valuable time to intervene.
Palatal expansion at this stage can help correct issues such as crowding, crossbites, and narrow arches that may not have been addressed earlier or have developed later. It also supports proper bite alignment and breathing function as teens approach their final growth phase.
By widening the upper jaw in a controlled and effective way, we can create the space needed for healthier tooth positioning, improve airway capacity, and help prevent the need for extractions or surgery later on.

How Treatment Works:
- Fitting Phase: Digital 3D scans (or impressions) are used to design a custom-fit expander. The appliance is bonded or cemented to the upper molars—and in teen cases, often augmented with small, biocompatible TADs in the palate for direct skeletal anchorage.
- Activation Phase: You or a parent will turn an activation key—typically once or twice daily—to apply gentle outward pressure through both the TADs and the appliance. Expansion generally continues for 2–4 weeks, depending on individual growth patterns and the amount of widening needed.
- Retention Phase: Once the desired width is achieved, the expander—and TADs if still clinically indicated—remains in place for 3–6 months to stabilize the new bone. Progress is monitored with periodic check-ups, either in-clinic or via our secure teledentistry platform for convenience.
- Regular follow-up appointments every few weeks to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed. This can be remotely or face to face
- Throughout treatment, we ensure that both patient and parent/guardian fully understand each step, potential sensations, and care instructions, obtaining informed consent before activation begins.
Why Palatal Expansion for Teens?
Palatal expansion in adolescence offers an opportunity to guide the growth of the upper jaw (maxilla) while facial structures are still responsive. By gently widening the palate, we can:
- Create a balanced mid-face appearance and prevent narrow upper arches that can lead to a “pinched” look.
- Reduce or eliminate crowding, minimise the need for extractions, and provide more predictable alignment when used in conjunction with braces or clear aligners.
- Widening the palate can increase nasal airflow, potentially improving breathing comfort during sleep and daily activities.
