RME - Rapid Maxillary Expansion / Phase 1 treatment
Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is a common orthodontic treatment used to widen the upper jaw in children. The procedure is typically recommended for children with a narrow upper jaw, which can cause a variety of orthodontic problems, including overcrowding, crossbite, and breathing difficulties.
The appliance is designed to gradually widen the upper jaw, creating more space for the teeth, and improving the child’s overall bite and oral function.
The procedure is typically well-tolerated and can provide significant benefits in terms of improving the child’s bite, breathing, and overall oral health.
Features of a maxillary expander
- The RME is a 3D printed metal appliance that fixes to the teeth on each side of the palate
- There is a bar that goes across the palate with a small keyhole. The key is used to turn a special screw and slowly this creates expansion of the palate
- It is especially used in children with cross bites which is where the upper back teeth do not overlap the lower back teeth
- Using an RME in combination with Invisalign for kids will reduce/ eliminate the need for orthodontics as a teenager
- It will minimise the need for permanent tooth extractions as a teenager
- Early treatment of underbites and cross bites can be treated
Arch expansion treatment FAQ’s
No, the RME is glued to the teeth and can only be removed by the orthodontist.
The procedure of fitting an RME is not painful. The teeth are not drilled, and anaesthetic will not be necessary.
When the key is turned the child will feel some pressure on the teeth, but this should not be painful.
We instruct the parent on how to turn the key.
The appliance would be turned once or twice a day according to the movements needed.
Treatment times vary from 8 to 12 months.
