Orofacial Myo-functional Therapy can be defined as the study and treatment of the oral and facial muscles as they relate breathing, speech, alignment of the teeth, correct chewing and swallowing patterns, posture, and overall physical and mental health. (Holtzman 2014)
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMD’s) refer to the “dysfunctional breathing (breathing through the mouth), the abnormal resting position of the muscles of the lips and tongue, poor function of the muscles of the face and mouth, incorrect chewing and swallowing patterns, dental malocclusion (crowded teeth), speech and postural problems.” Hanson (1982).
If you’re looking for expert orofacial myofunctional therapy near you then our highly experienced team can help.
Many patients near us referred for orthodontic treatment display signs of OMD’s. There is emerging evidence that combining Oro Facial Myo-Functional Therapy provides a more holistic approach.
Combining the repositioning of the teeth supported by the correct use of the nose to breathe and the correct use of the facial, tongue and swallowing pattern enhance the growth and development of the face and jaws.
There is also evidence of reduction in the risk of ‘relapse’ of the orthodontic treatment.
The signs and symptoms of OMD’s are many, varied and, sadly, surprisingly common. Many of the signs start early in life and if left untreated may lead to the development of more significant health problems over a lifetime.
Of course, this does not include times when you are eating, drinking, or speaking.
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is not a ‘quick fix’. Therapy consists of a programme of a targeted of exercises over a 3-12month period.
The length of the programme will vary depending on the severity or complexity of the individual.
It requires a commitment from the individual, or, in the case of a child, parental support is essential. The exercise programme prescribed needs to be completed daily and will take between 10-15 minutes 3 x a day.
Any adult showing signs or symptoms of OMD’s can be helped towards restoring normal function of the orofacial tissues and correcting disordered breathing.
All children displaying signs of OMD’s can be aided to restore normal function and support the correct development of the growing face and mouth structures and the position of the erupting teeth.
Our stunning practice is as comfortable and welcoming as it looks. We have all the latest equipment and facilities available to offer you the very best in orthodontics and children’s dentistry.
